Back in Black

I just logged into my Blog after a long dry spell. I probably should never have stopped since it's probably the most therapeutic thing I do besides drink.

Nothing heady in this post but I did want to say that I appreciate those that have read the rants and resonate with at least some of the things in them. Some of you that have left comments, I'd love to respond back to but there is was no way to leave a comment. I believe you have to "allow" comments for those of you didn't check the box. Gamal, for example wrote a comment and was unemployed as of January 2010 after graduating from college. Hopefully he found a decent job and is suffering no longer- been there done that as they say.

Generally speaking, I'm pleased with the current administration. The folks I'm not very happy with is our media. Why you ask? Well, in my view, the "media" is no longer happy with reporting events and now seems, more than ever, trying to create events and personalities. Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and the Tea Party effort have all recently been created by the media. Face it, 30 years ago, Sarah Palin would have been dismissed as a nut job, Newt would have been drummed out of politics for adulterous hypocracy and the tea party, well...they would have been considered fascist and certainly unworthy of any kind of media attention. This list goes on and is not limited to any particular party- although it does seem like it's heavily weighed to the right. What I want to leave you with is an improved sense of awareness of media coverage. Face it, now that all of the newspapers are either gone or owned by Rupert Murdoch, we have to get the "news" from someplace. I just want to stress that you now not only have to discern whether the story is being reported accurately but whether or not the piece is simply "non-news" or fabricated all together. I know it's difficult but a couple of things to watch for is a. the actual number of Americans involved or approving of that person, issue or movement and b. How many Americans are or will be affected by this news. If the numbers are small, chances are good the story was a non-story that has been beefed up by the media because it was a slow news day or they were trying to trump another media outlet. Neither of these reasons are doing anyone in this country any good.

Bottom line is that we need to get back to core conversations about policy and just who it benefits directly. If the majority of us don't benefit from something or it isn't simply a moral imperative for an enlightened society, then we probably shouldn't be endorsing it.
