Serena
If you watch sports, and especially tennis, last night's match between Capriatti and Serena Williams was a travesty of officiating. There are simply no words to describe how bad the calls were, five or six in all, all against Serena. Still, Serena handled the entire situation with the dignity of a truly great champion. As she put it, she was robbed.
We take these kinds of things lightly but we would do well to remember that this is her livelihood and the money involved isn't trivial. Call it what you like, a series of misfortunes, bad calls or a conspiracy but Serena won't advance to the next round and these calls probably cost her thousands. The umpire apologized but it never should have happened in the first place. Evidently, there needs to be some other check in the system.
